It's a new year, and that means it’s time to make resolutions.
Typically, those tend to revolve around diets, exercise plans, planning time to do more things you enjoy, etc. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with that.
But in reading this issue’s feature on some hometown superheroes, it occurred to me that the start of a new year is also a great time to resolve to follow their lead and get involved in the community, in whatever role you choose to play in improving the world around us.
Certainly, there is a plethora of opportunities to do that here in Venice, from putting into action your love for animals (St. Francis Animal Rescue, Venice Wildlife) to helping to preserve Venice’s history (Venice Museum and Archives), to picking up a hammer and swinging away for those in need (Habitat for Humanity) to keeping our environment pleasing (Venice Area Beautification Inc.). I could name many more nonprofits here—Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Chalk Festival and Loveland Center are just a few that come to mind—but you might also want to reach out to the Gulf Coast Community Foundation (gulfcoastcf.org) for help in finding the right match for your talents and interests. (The foundation, by the way, received contributions in its 2016 fiscal year of a record $31 million and invested $29 million in grants, initiatives and scholarships, proving once more just how philanthropic our town is.)
Remember, giving always makes the giver feel as good as—or better than—the recipient. As Vicki Dean, the writer who interviewed our superheroes, told us, “They have helped restore my faith in humanity.”
Of course, if you’re going to save the world you need lots of energy. Our guide to the area’s best breakfasts can help get you fueled to face the day. I’m not a morning person myself, but even I couldn’t resist sampling some of the eye-opening goodies served up at the top dozen spots we’ve selected for this issue. (Venice Airport’s Suncoast Café, I’m talking about you.) Which might lead to forming another resolution: Eat more breakfast!
Hoping you find the right mix of fun, food and friends in 2018.
