The days of being held hostage by I-75 backups are over. The long-awaited Honore Extension at Pinebrook and Laurel Road finally opened today. This is a big deal; we now have an I-75 alternate all the way to Manatee County (if you dare to risk the University Parkway traffic nightmare where Honore ends.)
The road opening at Pinebrook and Laurel Roads this morning is the final segment of the Honore extension project, which stretches from Fruitville Road in north county to Venice. The $11.7 million construction contract for this latest phase was funded through state grants and local taxes
The County was kind of quiet about the opening this week. Better to announce it when it's open then to give us all a date and fail to meet it. For now, it is the most pleasant road in all of Sarasota County. From Pinebrook heading north, the new road stops at a light at 681, giving you the option of turning left on 681 to reach U.S. 41 at Nokomis/Osprey, or turning right to reach I-75. If you continue on Honore, it meanders past open fields and through the southern part of Palmer Ranch. You'll encounter mostly roundabouts and little traffic, until the word gets out.
Having another road for those of us with teen drivers is such a relief. There have been a handful of fatal accidents on I-75 this season and now young drivers truly have an alternate path to reach Sarasota. Go take a ride and let us know what you think.
