Leave it to these most creative folks to take lemons and make art. A beautiful show at the Venice Art Center opened Friday. Tutti Frutti: Fruitful Inspirations is an all-media juried show. First-place winner Hodges Soileau created the oil on linen, Flying Pelicans. Soilea was a professional illustrator in New York before moving to Venice. The pastel Not a Good Fit by Jeff Cornell took second place. Two merit award winners, Karen Hitt and Judy Saltzman, created very different paintings from the same theme. Saltzman's Almost Calorie Free is a watercolor of yummy-looking pastries topped with delectable fruit, while Hitt's Artist's Studio Life with Lemons is enchanting thanks to the paintings within the painting. (Make what you will of the laundry hanging outside just behind the lemons in this native Venetian's oil on linen.) These are only a few pieces of the art and pottery on display at the center, located at 390 S. Nokomis Ave., open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The show runs through Oct. 2.
