Question: Vinnie, what’s your forecast for Venice High School sports this fall? —Jim H.

Answer: Hang on to your stadium seat Jim, because it’s going to be a heck of a season! In football, the Indians have been named “the team to beat” in Class 7A (District 10) competition. You’ll be hearing plenty about players including Omari Phillips, the defensive tackle who has already committed to the University of Florida, and running back Danny Dillard, who is being recruited by Division I schools nationwide. And if you’re the wagering type, you might want to place your odds on Venice’s volleyball team winning the district championship, seeing as they’ve won it every year since 2002! Be sure to take in some basketball games as well; the boys’ team has a new coach, James Sleighton, while rumor has it that the girls’ team has some surprises up its sleeve. It’s worth attending a few games just so you can say “I witnessed a scalping in the teepee,” otherwise known as the Venice High gym.
