All the development on the city’s northeast side is finally yielding new restaurants to go along with all those new rooftops.
Asaro’s Italian restaurant will open at the Plaza Venezia on Laurel and Pinebrook roads in late February in an area that is now a dining desert except for McDonald’s and Chinese takeout. Sicilian-born Frank Asaro and his family operate a handful of restaurants in New York and one in North Port. The Asaros are still tinkering with the menu at their newest location, but expect a variety of gourmet pizzas and pasta.
Also in February, the 18-year-old British Open Pub will relocate to Jacaranda Commons at Jacaranda and East Venice Avenue, from its location near the Frank’s Theater on south U.S. 41. While the move is a blow to those of us who like to grab a beer and some fish and chips before a movie, it’s a boon for the residents near east Venice Avenue, which likewise has few dining options.
The new British Pub will be about 1,200 feet larger than its existing location; it will have outdoor dining, a private dining room and will expand from beer and wine to a full bar.
“We will still have the same charm, but we will be a little more elegant,” says manager Craig Whitehead.
Also new to the area is Helio’s Café, a Greek eatery at 1740 E. Venice Ave., in the Villa Venezia Plaza near Allegro Bistro.
