Few people have had more of an impact on the South County Family YMCA in Venice than have Herb and Jeannette Hanchey. A new monument near the entrance of the YMCA, denoting the "Herb and Jeannette Hanchey YMCA Campus," will make sure their contributions are never overlooked.
Scores of YMCA supporters, including Jeannette, attended a dedication ceremony Tuesday. Herb passed away several years ago, but Jeannette remains an active volunteer, who is "not afraid to get her hands dirty," said Christina Naletko, the YMCA's marketing director.
In 1967, the Hancheys donated the land for the YMCA. They were also instrumental in construction of the gymnasium, pool and other facilities. The YMCA is in the process of raising money to build a new preschool that will be named after the Hancheys. Around $1.5 million of the estimated $2 million cost for the building has been raised.
The new preschool is part of a major outreach by the YMCA to boost child care and education in the Venice area. The YMCA is also partnering with PGT to build a preschool/child care facility at the window manufacturer in Venice. PGT is one of the area's largest employers and child care is vital to retaining employees.
