We Venetians suddenly have all kinds of breakfast options that don't involve a drive-through. First Watch opened Monday in South Venice and in a few weeks, the Original Word of Mouth opens its second breakfast-lunch restaurant on East Venice Avenue near Allegro Bistro. Known for its fresh baked bread, scones and muffins and specialty dishes such as smoked salmon frittata, crab eggs Benedict and corned-beef hash, the restaurant's motto is "Fresh. Simple. Elegant." It also serves cappuccino, latte and espresso.
"Venice is waiting for us and we are excited," says owner Mario Mazzini, a former executive with the upscale Le Meridian Group hotel chain. "We are trying to create a homey environment," and that includes an oversized counter where people can dine and socialize.
The Original Word of Mouth (not to be confused with the similarly named restaurant on Osprey Avenue in Sarasota) is scheduled to open in mid-to-late July.
The restaurant is building in the space once occupied by Helios Cafe at 1740 E. Venice Ave. in the Villa Venezia Plaza. Check out their menu at originalwordofmouth.com.
The Original Word of Mouth opened in Sarasota about 20 years ago; Mazzini purchased it in 2013 after a short-lived retirement.
"I tried to play golf but you can only play golf so much," Mazzini says.
